Did you know that in 1851 the first Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was opened in Boston, MA?  Pennsylvania followed shortly thereafter with its first YMCA opening in 1854 and Lock Haven opened its YMCA on July 19, 1897. It was located in the building housing the Brown Boot Shop on Main Street. The building had four rooms which comprised of a room for meditation, club purposes and social events; in the rear on the first floor was a 2 lane bowling alley, and on the second floor was a gym and locker room. Along with the YMCA opening, the Boy Scout movement was beginning and in 1911 a Mr. R.W. Mathews formed Boy Scout Troop #1 in Lock Haven.
